What is an HS code?
An HS code is a number from the Harmonized System, the international product classification maintained by the World Customs Organization. The first six digits are the same in over 200 economies and are used to apply duties, trade agreement rates and import controls, and to record trade statistics.
How many digits is a Pakistan HS code?
Pakistan Customs Tariff (PCT) codes have eight digits. The first six follow the international HS, and the last two are Pakistan's own national split, published by the FBR in the First Schedule to the Customs Act, 1969.
Where can I find the HS code for my product in Pakistan?
Use the FBR's Pakistan Customs Tariff search or the current year's tariff PDF on fbr.gov.pk, check the WCO's HS database for the heading notes, and confirm with a licensed customs agent. For certainty you can apply for an advance ruling under section 212B of the Customs Act.
Is the HS code the same in every country?
Only the first six digits are shared. Each country adds national digits: Pakistan uses 8, the EU 8 (10 in TARIC) and the United States 10. Exporters must use the importing country's full code on the buyer's side.
What is the HS code for basmati rice?
Milled basmati rice is normally classified under HS subheading 1006.30 (semi-milled or wholly milled rice). Paddy rice falls under 1006.10 and husked brown rice under 1006.20. Check the current PCT for the full 8-digit Pakistani line.
What happens if I use the wrong HS code?
Customs can recover underpaid duty with penalties, delay clearance, refuse a trade agreement preference or seize restricted goods. Keep records of how you classified each product and make sure the code matches on every shipping document.
